One of the three top global security companies, operating in Afghanistan, needed an aviation security director to assume overall responsibility for four Afghan international airports and a total team of nearly 500 (including c.450 Afghan nationals). Complex cultural and political sensitivities would need to be managed as well. The Grichan Partnership was, therefore, tasked with finding a security expert with diplomatic skills who was comfortable working in an ‘austere’ environment and managing a large team of foreign nationals spread across a sometimes hostile landscape. The shortlist was presented in less than four weeks and the appointee remains successfully in post today.
During 2017 The Grichan Partnership worked very closely with one of the largest UK outsourced support service providers to source business-unit managing directors, business development directors and bid directors with full P&L responsibilities running to £650M. Each of these assignments was delivered in 3-5 weeks and both clients and candidates have left us spectacular LinkedIn references on their experience of being served by / sourced by the Grichan Team. These hires also shone a light on the diversity challenge within the business and the client company did all it could to ensure there were as many women on the resultant shortlists as were available in the marketplace.
Four consortia were bidding for the Successor Submarine Programme Controls Transformation Project, a component package of the MoD’s £1.5bn initial investment in the replacement for Trident. One of these, a global consultancy in partnership with a world-class engineering company, was assisted by Grichan’s bid support service. We provided proposal management, technical subject matter experts, bid writing and bid editors and ran the entire gateway/milestone review process. Our Client’s bid won.
A global security and risk management company, with no experience of tendering for large-scale UK public sector contracts, engaged The Grichan Partnership to guide and mentor their bid team tendering for the HS2 Specialist Security Services contract. Working with that team and the board of directors, we provided the expertise to frame the tender (incorporating a significant technical element) and support the bid manager. Our involvement was later extended to supporting the commercial response and also formulating the technical specification. They won their bid.
Grichan’s cyber consultancy proved a ‘game-changer’ for a major engineering firm with significant, but unexploited, cyber expertise. The company’s capabilities were “smattered all over the place”, to quote one source, and they had no sense of how to harness them to win business, nor any means of evaluating a potential pipeline. Grichan Partnership assisted with market mapping and an analysis of various potential leads that were not being exploited, as well as providing the expertise needed to frame the ‘go-to-market’ offer. We also provided an interim business development director to take the proposition to the market. The firm now has a viable business stream, grown from nothing in under twelve months.
One of the world’s premier risk management businesses approached The Grichan Partnership to source and select the services of a new General Counsel. From a diversity point of view, it was felt that the search should be focused on finding a woman to join the all-male, all ex-British Army, Board of Directors. Within six weeks an offer was made and the successful candidate did indeed bring a much better balance to the (formerly) all-male Board of Directors. In 2018 the appointee, through a period of acquisition, is now in the enhanced role of Global General Counsel for, arguably, the world’s second-largest provider of security and risk management services.
A global, tier 1 automotive supplier, at the forefront of the development of future electric-vehicle power systems, approached The Grichan Partnership with a brief to identify a research director with world-class power electronics expertise. Requiring a PhD supplemented by industrial research experience, this position was a significant challenge but, through tightly targeted research, we produced a shortlist that enabled the company to appoint within eight weeks. As a direct result of this success, The Grichan Partnership is now the company’s partner for sourcing its specialist engineers.
A remotely-located Somerset company with an international, blue-chip client list had struggled to find project managers for several months. The Grichan Partnerships Qualified Selection team was offered the challenge of exceeding the performance of the company’s incumbent recruiters and did so within four weeks, sourcing two project managers and a purchasing and supply chain manager. The Grichan Partnership is now one of the firm’s two preferred recruiters.
Our client, the second-largest private employer in the world, with business interests ranging from back-office outsourced services to high-threat security risk mitigation, engaged The Grichan Partnership to secure an Amsterdam-based sales operations leader to drive prospecting and acquisition across 31 countries. Within thirty working days, an offer had been made to a European national. As at February 2018, the appointee has just been promoted, after an exceptionally successful period, to be Group Sales and Marketing Director of this FTSE-100 Company.
A Fortune-500 client, one of the World’s largest companies, identified Grichan Partnership as a search consultancy with global reach and results that merited inclusion on their ‘preferred supplier’ list. This company had previously relied exclusively on an internal sourcing model that was both over-utilised and delivering variable results. At the global Group HR Director’s direction, an internal project was carried out to select two search consultancies that could supplement internal capability, when required, whilst retaining control over costs.
Along with a large well-known and branded executive search consultancy, Grichan was selected as the ‘niche, boutique’ consultancy to provide global recruitment services.
Following the initial assignments, our new client confirmed to us that we had exceeded expectations and that our consultants’ approach, turnaround times, and the results themselves were of a much higher standard than the other larger, longer-established agency. This gave Grichan the opportunity to work on increasingly important roles culminating in a search to find the individual that would lead the strategy, design, build and operation of a new division of this global company – a division that would eventually employ 3,000 staff in a purpose-built facility in North America.
This new division would have no single global competitor and its creation was only possible due to the global resources of our client. From discussing the role profile of a successful individual to presenting a short-list was completed in a six-week time-frame; with placement made soon after. As feedback the client pointed out: “Grichan consultants come with business backgrounds and travel to meet both client and candidate wherever and whenever they need; whereas the other provider takes a different approach. The other provider has a lead consultant in the very early stage of their work life, with no business experience, and is further disadvantaged by internal procedure that restricts travel to meet client or candidate”.
